FANUC Robotics Unveils M-2000iA, the World’s Strongest Robot

M-2000iA calimed as world’s strongest robot:

FANUC Robotics America Inc has introduced M-2000iA, a six-arm, heavy-duty robot.

The robot was demonstrated during IMTS 2008, a Chicago show, earlier this month.

FANUC designs, engineers and manufactures industrial robots and robotic systems for applications such as arc and spot welding, material handling (machine tending, picking, packing, palletizing), material removal, assembly, paint finishing and dispensing.

“The M-2000iA is the world’s largest and strongest six-axis robot,” said Rich Meyer, a product manager at FANUC Robotics. “It has the longest reach and the strongest wrist – surpassing all other six-axis robots available today. The wrist strength sets a record, but more importantly, allows our customers to move large heavy parts a great distance with maximum stability. We’re excited to provide our customers with this capability. It will help them meet production requirements, and save significant costs associated with conveyors, lifts and other fixed automation.”

According to the company, the M-2000iA/900L robot offers a 900 kg payload and is designed to meet the requirements for managing truck, tractor, and automotive frames and parts. There is also another model M-2000iA/1200L that offers a 1200 kg payload.

The key features and advantages of M-2000iA are that it has a maximum payload of 1,200 kg (M-2000iA/1200) and 900kg (M-2000iA/900L) and vertical lifting stroke of 6.2 m (M-2000iA/900L). The rigid arm offers stable transferring of heavy payloads. It has a Built-in vision and force sensing and reduces costs associated with fixed automation

The company says its robot has the strongest wrist that handles super heavy products with stability. The Wrist is also IP67 protected for operation in harsh environments.

The arm of the 900L has a vertical lifting stroke of 6.2 m and can lift heavy objects such as a car while 1200L comes with a 1.25 m offset from the faceplate and full articulated motion at the wrist. FANUC claims that a single 1200L robot can equate the power of two robots with its strong arm power on all six axes.

Robotics Short Story

The word robotics was derived from the word robot, which was introduced to the public by Czech writer Karel Čapek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), which premiered in 1921.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word robotics was first used in print by Isaac Asimov, in his science fiction short story "Liar!", published in May 1941 in Astounding Science Fiction. Asimov was unaware that he was coining the term; since the science and technology of electrical devices is electronics, he assumed robotics already referred to the science and technology of robots. In some of Asimov's other works, he states that the first use of the word robotics was in his short story Runaround (Astounding Science Fiction, March 1942). However, the word robotics appears in "Liar!"
